The use of colours

The use of Color
At the end of the 19th century a group of painters abandoned the use of colour as we know it was used in earlier periods.. This group of artists were influenced by Cezanne, Van Gogh, and Gauguin. Led by Henri Matisse, they were known as the Fauves, or "the wild beasts." They used brilliant hues not to describe objects, but made colour the subject of painting itself. A painting in the "Fauvist Manner" was one that related color shapes; rather than unifying a design with lines. This turn from tradition brought an integrity to color which was regarded on its own merit and was used from the painting tubes without much mixing. Using colour is not at all mystical, but some basic ideas must be made clear if we want to use it without fear and drive it to the directions we have in mind.
Color Basics
Colour is the characteristic of light described by a color name. It is a fact that color is light, and light is composed of many colours—the ones we see in a rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. Objects absorb certain wavelengths and reflect others back to the viewer. We perceive these wavelengths as colour.
A colour is described in three ways: by its name, how pure or desaturated it is, and its value or lightness. Although pink, crimson, and brick are all variations of the color red, each hue is made different by its saturation, intensity, and value.
Ιntensity, saturation and luminance/value are inter-related terms and have to do with the description of a color.
Saturation: The degree of purity of a hue, that is how red is a red for example, Ταor if it is broken with another colour.
Intensity: The brightness or dullness of a hue. One may lower the intensity by adding white or black.
Luminance / Value: A measure of the amount of light reflected from a hue. Those hues with a high content of white have a higher luminance or value.
Shade and tint are terms that refer to a variation of a hue.

A hue produced by the addition of black.
Tint: A hue produced by the addition of white
Color Combinations
Color combinations may pass unnoticed when pleasing, yet offend dramatically when compositions seem to clash. One outcome we seek in the final form or composition, is a successful use of color.
We determine whether or not we are successful by critically assessing the visual balance and harmony of the final composition—balance and harmony are achieved by the visual contrast that exists between color combinations. Planning a successful color combination begins with the investigation, and understanding, of color relationships.
Using a color wheel and a template, the relationships between colors are easy to identify.

Monochromatic Relationship Colors that are shade or tint variations of the same hue.

Complementary Relationship Those colors across from each other on a color wheel.

Analogous Relationship Those colors located adjacent to each other on a color wheel.

Triad Relationship Three hues equally positioned on a color wheel

Colour (Part 1)

COLOUR ( Part 1)
It's true that individual colours have a bias towards cool or warm for colour mixing. If you mix two warms together, you'll get a warm secondary colour and, if you mix two cools together you'll get a cool secondary.
For example, mixing cadmium yellow and cadmium red light creates a warm orange. If you mix lemon yellow with alizarin crimson, you get a cooler, more gray orange. Mixing secondary colours is not only about the proportions in which you mix two primary colours, but also knowing what different reds, yellows, and blues produce.
As a group, reds and yellows are considered warm colours and blue a cool colour. But if you compare different reds (or yellows or blues), you'll see that there are warm and cool versions of each of these colours (relative to each other only). For example, cadmium red is definitely warmer than alizarin crimson (though alizarin crimson will always be warmer than, say, a blue).
Secondary colours are made by mixing two primary colours together: red and yellow to get orange, yellow and blue to get green, or red and blue to get purple. The secondary colour you get depends on the proportions in which you mix the two primaries. If you mix three primary colours together, you get a tertiary colour.
The proportions in which you mix the two primaries is important. If you add more of one than the other, the secondary colour will reflect this. For example, if you add more red than yellow, you end up with a strong, reddish orange; if you add more yellow than red, you produce a yellowish orange. Experiment with all the colours you have - and keep a record of what you've done.
But you'll find that there'll always be an instance when the colour you want simply doesn't come ready-made, such as a particular green in a landscape. Your knowledge of colour mixing will enable you to adapt a ready-made green to the shade you require.
The advantage of buying a premixed colour is that you are sure you are getting the same hue each time. And some single-pigment secondary colours, such as cadmium orange, have an intensity that's hard to match from mixed colours.
Browns and greys contain all three primary colours. They're created by mixing either all three primary colours or a primary and secondary colour (secondary colours of course being made from two primaries). By varying the proportions of the colours you're mixing, you create the different tertiary colours.
Mix a primary colour with its complementary colour. So add orange to blue, purple to yellow, or green to red. Each of these makes a different brown, so once again make up a colour chart to give you a quick reference to refer to.
Mix some orange (or yellow and red) with a blue then add some white. You'll always want more blue than orange, but experiment with the amount of white you use. You can also mix blue with an earth colour, such as raw umber or burnt sienna.

Colour (part 2)

COLOUR (Part 2)
If you mix too many colours together, you'll get mud. If your gray or brown isn't coming out the way you want it to, it’s best if you start again than add more colour in the hope it'll work.
The complementary colour of a primary colour (red, blue, or yellow) is the colour you get by mixing the other two primary colours. So the complementary colour of red is green, of blue is orange, and of yellow is purple
When placed next to each other, complementary colours make each other appear brighter, more intense. The shadow of an object will also contain its complementary colour, for example the shadow of a green apple will contain some red.
While it may seem logical that to lighten a colour you add white to it and that to darken it you add black, this is an oversimplification. White reduces brightness so although it makes a colour lighter, it removes its vibrancy. Black doesn't so much add darkness as create murkiness (though there are instances in which black is uniquely useful, such as the range of greens it can produce when mixed with yellow!).
Adding white to a colour produces a tint of that colour, makes a transparent colour (such as ultramarine) opaque, and cools the colour. This is most noticeable with red, which changes from a warm red into a cool pink when you use titanium white. You can add white to lighten a colour, but because this removes the vibrancy of a colour you'll end up with a washed-out picture if you use white to lighten all you colours. Rather develop your colour mixing skills to produce hues of varying intensity. For example, to lighten a red, add some yellow instead than white (or try zinc white)
Black tends to dirty colours rather than simply darken them. Of the most common blacks, Mars black is the blackest and is very opaque, ivory black has a brown undertone, and lamp black a blue undertone.
Think about how much is truly black in nature. Shadows are not simply black, nor a darker version of the colour of the object. They contain the complementary colour of the object.
Take, for example, the shadow on a yellow object. If you mix black and yellow, you get an unattractive olive green. Instead of using this for the shadow, use a deep purple. Purple being the complementary colour of yellow, both will look more vibrant.
It's not true to say the Impressionists never ever used black, but they certainly popularized the idea that they never did.
If you can't see yourself working without black, then consider mixing up a raw umber with ultramarine rather than using a straight-from-the-tube black. It also has the advantage of not 'killing' a colour it's mixed with to the same extent.
Opaque pigments are dense and tend to block out other colours. This makes them ideal for subjects that are solid and heavy, such as tree trunks. Transparent pigments are light and airy, barely showing on top of other colours. This makes them ideal for atmospheric subjects such as a misty morning or diaphanous fabrics.

Painting theory terms part one

PAINTING THEORY TERMS Part One Hue, Purity and Value
Colours are classified by three properties: hue, purity and value — terms that are often misunderstood.

Hue
Hue is the name of the colour, such as red yellow, orange, green etc. The strip shows primary, secondary and tertiary hues.

Purity
The freedom from other colour admixtures. Saturation is the degree of purity. Chroma is the purity in relationship to gray. (. Some authors also use intensity to mean colour purity, whereas for others it means tone/value.)

Value

It means the luminance — brightness or dullness — of a hue. It is also called tone or tonal value.
A tint is made by adding white to a hue, and shade is made by adding black. As far as oil painting pigments are concerned, mixing in white or black with usually lower the purity of a hue, making it chalkier or muddier.

Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Colours
Red, yellow and blue are the primary colours, which can't be derived from still more basic colours. Mixing two primary colours will create one of the secondary colours: orange, green or purple. A secondary colour mixed with an adjacent primary (on the colour wheel) will create a tertiary colour.
Colour Warmth
Colours are also commonly described as warm or cold. Warm colours are the red, orange and yellow, and are 'active', causing them to 'advance'. Blue colours, particularly when dark and/or under saturated, are 'cool' and tend to 'recede'. Other areas of the spectrum remain neutral
Mixing Colours
Colour theory provides only a rough guide to mixing paints. In practice you will need to:
1. Experiment to learn the individual properties of pigments and their mixtures, probably making reference charts to begin with.
2. Make more attractive tints and shades with colours other than white and black (e.g. light and dark earths).
3. Purchase pigments for the secondary and certainly the tertiary colours. Mixing primaries will only result in muddy hues.
4. Use glazes if you wish to modify colours without mixing them overmuch.
Colour Harmony: Approaches
As always, the important thing is to see for yourself — to study the great masterworks and experiment with their colour schemes to understand what has been done and why. You can do that easily today by taking copies of the work (scanning books or using Internet sites) .
There are indeed many schemes for colour harmony, but the following should be useful to the painter. Note that they apply only to hues: for variety you can (and should) vary the purity and tones of the hues concerned.

Painting Hints ( Οδηγίες Ζωγραφικής )

Practical Hints
A few suggestions:
1. Research possibilities by studying recognized masterworks, and making your own exploratory sketches.
2. Establish the full range at the outset — in tone, color, contrasts, etc. — either on the canvas itself, in sketches, or at least on the palette.
3. Once started, work the painting as a whole.
4. Go from the general to the particular, laying in the broad shapes and tones before attending to details.
5. Stop at convenient intervals and take stock of achievements and possibilities. View in a mirror and upside down to spot mistakes.
6. Make exploratory studies throughout the painting process.
7. Be sensible, but don't shy away from unexpected difficulties: overcoming them will push your work in new directions.
8. Take photos when really stuck, and analyze the images with a computer graphics program, rearranging elements to explore radical changes.
9. Try always to finish a painting, however bad: you will learn more from mistakes than those golden periods when everything goes well.

Drying Time in Painting

Drying time has to do with more than one factor. The painting surface plays a huge role in the drying time of your paint. When the priming is only one layer, the canvas remains absorbent because the base color on the canvas is very thin. The pre-stretched canvases in the hobby shops are usually very absorbent. Therefore, the oil that is in your tubes of paint will be quickly sucked into the canvas itself, and the paint will dry quicker. If you buy a roll of canvas, it has a double layer of acrylic priming and the paint dries slower. Before you start painting, cover the canvas with one or two layers of Gesso and when the layers dry , make a brownish color (burnt sienna, cobalt, raw sienna ) and spread it on the canvas, diluted only with turpentine and a little painting medium with a piece of cloth. This procedure will protect the canvas fibers from the chemicals of the paints.Personally I use a mixture of the basic mediums (oil painting medium+ poppy oil+ stand oil) with a smaller portion of retouch varnish. This mixture carries the qualities of each medium. The retouch varnish for a firm hold of the paint on the canvas, even after a dry layer of paint, the linseed oil which gives gloss to the canvas, the poppy oil which doesn’t turn yellowish and the honey like stand oil which is good for final touches. The mixture has a 24 hour drying time. You may speed up this time with a little turpentine.Colors dry at different times. Flake white for example dries fast, whereas zinc white is very slow in drying. When you make mixtures with Burnt Umber –Raw Umber and Flake white they will speed up drying time. Bright colors like Cadmium red- Cadmium Yellow and Alizarin Crimson will slow down drying time when they are added to the mixtures.

All about color
In order to darken red , add alizarin crimson with a little blue or green with the edge of the brush.
Red is not lit by white because it turns into pink. You ought to combine alizarin crimson with cadmium red, orange and yellow to give an intense red. If you add white it becomes a cooler bright red.
For a pale green add a little thalo green to white. For a darker green add a little cobalt , thalo blue or ultramarine.
Although red , blue or green and brown may become darker with a little black but you may add another dark color like ultramarine to red and green or alizarin to blue. You may of course add black to a dark color. Yellow becomes dark with yellow ochre , but it is not a real yellow (oil green). Ochre becomes darker with burnt sienna and a little black. Add a little red, blue , or green to make black warmer ,or cooler. Excessive black can not be real, nor excessive white which looks like chalk.
Yellow is opposite ultramarine. So yellow darkens with a little ultramarine. Burnt umber and ultramarine mix into a dark grey, suitable for morning shades. The opaque cadmium orange and the opaque blue produce a neutral dark. Burnt sienna and ultramarine make a hue of burnt umber. Burnt sienna is the dark of cadmium orange. They give a neutral dark.
An opaque red and a transparent thalo blue produce a neutral color suitable for a tomato shade. Permanent rose and thalo blue are opposite in the color wheel and make good shades of early afternoon shades in the foreground. Alizarin crimson and thalo blue give a satisfactory violet with a little white. Ready violet gets darker with alizarin crimson, but brighter and cooler with cobalt blue and a little white. Violet is neither cool nor warm.
Thalo green is transparent. With a little white and light yellow it turns opaque and very strong. Oxide green is a relatively warm semitransparent.
Orange with cobalt blue produce a neutral color. Yellow and purple give a dark brown and not a neutral dark, or grey.
All the complementary colors (red -green, blue - orange, purple - yellow) produce neutral browns.
The real primary colors are : magenta-yellow-cyan. Mixing these colors you can make all the possible colors.
Red is opposite cyan and gives a neutral grey. Cobalt with orange also produce a neutral grey, like burnt umber and ultramarine. Dark yellow is brown. When cyan gets dark it becomes ultramarine like the sky. Prussian blue is black green and gives a dirty purple, but beautiful greens. Magenta is transparent, but unstable. It was replaced by permanent rose. Light yellow and medium yellow are opposite ultramarine, whereas cadmium yellow is opposite cobalt blue, and so is burnt sienna. Light yellow is opposite thalo blue in the color wheel.
