An Interview of Pablo Picasso to author Papini
“ People do not look for relief and elevation in art. The rich, and the lazy that have nothing to do, in order to look different from the common people are looking for the weird, the unusual and the scandalous. Personally I satisfied the wise and the critics with all the changeable stupidities that came to my mind,
and the less they understood me the more they admired me. By entertaining myself with all these games and
stupidities, I became rich and what is more very quickly. And popularity for a painter means sales, profits, fortune and wealth. Today as you know I am famous and rich. But when I am alone with myself, I do not have the courage to consider myself an artist with the great and old sense of the word. Rembrand, Tzioto, Tiziano were really great painters. I am nothing else but an impostor, who understood the spirit of his times and exploited stupidity as well as he could, and the vanity and the arrogance of his contemporaries. My confession is bitter, more pitiful than it looks, but it happens to be sincere.
Dear readers, If you do not like a certain work of art which repulses you causing you nausea, do not hesitate to express your feelings. You may be more right than those who pretend to be ecstatic because they do not dare express themselves sincerely, fearing to be considered uncultivated and out of place. Deceit and adventurism thrive among the artists as everywhere else.

Abstract Expressionism

| |

Abstract Expressionism Abstract Expressionism was an art movement in American painting that flourished in the 1940s and 1950s. Sometimes referred to as the New York School, it was first related to the work of Vasily Kandinsky in 1929. Initially influenced by surrealism and cubism, abstract expressionists rejected the social realism, and geometric abstraction so popular with American painters of the 1930s. In the late 1930s and early '40s many European avant-garde artists travelled to New York and gave modern art a great boost.. The Abstract Expressionist style itself is generally regarded as having begun with the paintings done by Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning in the late 1940s and early '50s. The artists taking part in the movement asserted that it was a broad style with varying degrees of abstraction used to convey strong emotional or expressive content. Although the term primarily refers to a small group of painters, Abstract Expressionist qualities can also be seen in sculpture and photography. This style has nonetheless been interpreted as an especially 'American' style because of its attention to the physical immediacy of paint. It certainly became the first American visual art to achieve international status and influence. The works were usually abstract (i.e., they depicted forms which were not found in the natural world); they emphasized freedom of emotional expression, technique, and execution. The canvases were large, to enhance the visual effect and project monumentality and power. The movement had a great impact on U.S. and European art in the 1950s. Art historian Irving Sandler divides abstract expressionists into two categories: gesture painters and colour-field painters. Jackson Pollock remains the pre-eminent gesture painter; as in Cathedral (1947), Pollock avoided recognizable symbols entirely, composing delicate webs of interpenetrating shapes. Colour-field painters, on the other hand, suppressed all references to the past by painting unified fields of varying colour. Some of the most popular expressionist artists were Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman and de Kooning.

Surrealism

Surrealism
The term Surrealism or hyper-realism was used in 1917 by the French poet Apollinaire. The term meant the way reality can be explained. In order to transmit some of his ideas, the poet doesn’t copy the world statically or naturalistically, but dynamically with creative imagination. Apollinaire introduced the term in a more abstract way, without suggesting a new artistic school, or theory and maybe surrealism would remain a very specific and academic term if Andre Breton hadn’t incorporated all the characteristics that made the hyper-realistic movement famous, like the theories of Freud about the dreams or the sub conscience, especially automation.
Breton quotes in the Surrealist manifesto that was published in 1924, that Surrealism is the psychological automation that dictates thought, with the absence of any control and logic, out of esthetic prejudice or morality. Quite often the term is used to imply something imaginary, weird ludicrous or crazy.
Hyper-realism was borne in Paris and developed by young poets of the time, especially by a team that ran the literary magazine ‘literature’ between 1919-1924, formulating a tendency that later led to the publication of the manifesto of Surrealism. The movement was influenced by the German Romanticism and the British Gothic roman. The theories of Freud influenced the surrealists who were not interested however in the therapeutical impact of the psychoanalytical method. What they were interested in were the dreams as a means of liberating human imagination. Their main reason for breaking apart from the Dadaists with whom they had common roots in hyper-realism, was their disagreement if there is anything that can be become acceptable or not in art, because their dedication to automation and the Freudian theories was undeniable. They didn’t accept the absolute deniable of the Dadaists for art, but they were looking for a social vision and an expression free of any kind of logic.
The rise of Nazism and the events of 1939-1945 obscured every other activity. In 1941 Breton visits the United States to promote Hyper-realism. Although it is difficult for somebody to talk about the end of the Surrealist movement, as its influence on other art currents is continuous, many art historians consider the period of the Second World War as the beginning of the end of hyper-realism. As an organized art current it is finally abandoned with the death of Andre Breton in 1966. Some of the most famous painters, who were only one part of the surrealist movement, were the Spanish Salvador Dali, the Belgian Margrit, Mark Sagal, Miro and Max Ernst.

Art from Ancient Greece to the Medieval era

Art from Ancient Greece to Renaissance

The Greeks called art (techne), whereas the Latins called it (ars). The words however didn’t have the meaning we have given them in the modern times.

The first one to define the word art was the Greek philosopher Aristotle who said that art was an activity obeying rules from somebody who had knowledge of his craft. A person learned the rules of a craft since his childhood and after a long apprenticing, he became himself a sculptor, a painter or a carpenter.

Philosophy in Greece tried to bring order, balance and clarity to the chaos of nature and the world. In order to preserve this order, it had to apply rules and support them. This is what we call “classical”, that is traditional and conservative.

The painters and sculptors were different from other craftsmen only with respect to their mastering of technique and skill. Sculpture and painting were separated from music and poetry which were considered divine and enjoyed respect from everybody.

The word (techni) meant mechanic, implying making things manually. Painters and sculptors belonged to a lower class in society, because people didn’t think much for those who used their hands to make things. So, craft and fine arts in ancient Greece were considered one and the same thing.

In the late ancient period there was a list of seven arts: Astronomy, Arithmetic, Dialectic, Rhetoric, Geometry, grammar and Music. Painting and sculpture were neglected. Despite Pliny’s and Varro’s efforts to include architecture and painting among the other arts, visual arts were ignored, and even Seneca refused them a place among them. Both the Greeks and the Romans considered painting and sculpture as manual arts like other crafts.

The word artista was used in the middle ages and meant a craftsman like in the ancient period, that is a person who had an activity he had trained in. The artists of this period didn’t have a social status any better than their ancient colleges and were generally anonymous. People judged them for their skill and technique.

By the 12th -13th centuries painting and sculpture were listed among other mechanical crafts. Because they ground their colours they belonged to the guild of apothecaries and physicians. Sculptures belonged to the guild of goldsmith.

Works of the 5th century didn’t survive, we have however descriptions of some of them and information about the career of the greatest painters. Polygnotos dealt with the depiction of depth and the psychological condition of his figures. Apollodoros dealt with the perspective and tonal values. Agatharhos also tried to depict objects with a perspective. Zeuxis had a great career and it reported he was the first one to organize a beauty contest in order to find a model for the beautiful Helen of Troy. In the 4th century realism and exact depth were the objective of most painters. Apellis was the great Alexander’s official painter. Some copies of the greatest works were discovered in Pompeii.
