PAINTING THEORY TERMS Part One Hue, Purity and Value
Colours are classified by three properties: hue, purity and value — terms that are often misunderstood.

Hue
Hue is the name of the colour, such as red yellow, orange, green etc. The strip shows primary, secondary and tertiary hues.

Purity
The freedom from other colour admixtures. Saturation is the degree of purity. Chroma is the purity in relationship to gray. (. Some authors also use intensity to mean colour purity, whereas for others it means tone/value.)

Value

It means the luminance — brightness or dullness — of a hue. It is also called tone or tonal value.
A tint is made by adding white to a hue, and shade is made by adding black. As far as oil painting pigments are concerned, mixing in white or black with usually lower the purity of a hue, making it chalkier or muddier.

Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Colours
Red, yellow and blue are the primary colours, which can't be derived from still more basic colours. Mixing two primary colours will create one of the secondary colours: orange, green or purple. A secondary colour mixed with an adjacent primary (on the colour wheel) will create a tertiary colour.
Colour Warmth
Colours are also commonly described as warm or cold. Warm colours are the red, orange and yellow, and are 'active', causing them to 'advance'. Blue colours, particularly when dark and/or under saturated, are 'cool' and tend to 'recede'. Other areas of the spectrum remain neutral
Mixing Colours
Colour theory provides only a rough guide to mixing paints. In practice you will need to:
1. Experiment to learn the individual properties of pigments and their mixtures, probably making reference charts to begin with.
2. Make more attractive tints and shades with colours other than white and black (e.g. light and dark earths).
3. Purchase pigments for the secondary and certainly the tertiary colours. Mixing primaries will only result in muddy hues.
4. Use glazes if you wish to modify colours without mixing them overmuch.
Colour Harmony: Approaches
As always, the important thing is to see for yourself — to study the great masterworks and experiment with their colour schemes to understand what has been done and why. You can do that easily today by taking copies of the work (scanning books or using Internet sites) .
There are indeed many schemes for colour harmony, but the following should be useful to the painter. Note that they apply only to hues: for variety you can (and should) vary the purity and tones of the hues concerned.

Triadic
It uses all three hues that are equidistance on colour wheel. Hues may be varied in purity and tone as usual, and the scheme is further divided:

1. Primary colours only: very difficult to use outside posters and graphic design.
2. Secondary triadics, e.g. scarlet, mauve and viridian. Very beautiful effects can be achieved, probably because all colours contain some of the other two secondaries.
Green, blue and yellow appear in this detail from Vermeer's The Music Lesson ( 1664). Harmony has also been achieved by very skillful use of tone.

Split Complementary
Like analogous, but with the addition of the complementary of the mid-hue of the analogous range. A warm/cool balance is more easily introduced with this scheme.

This is a painting by Mary Cassatt (The Bath) ,where she uses tertiary hues, and falls somewhere between a triadic scheme and a split complementary one of red-purple against hues of green-blue. The background repeats the foreground colours but in muddier and darker colours.

Analogous
The composition uses just 3 hues of 12-color wheel - e.g. orange, orange-red and red. As before, the hues can be mixed, and their tones adjusted.
This scheme can be further divided into:
1. One pure hue and the other two semi-neutral (i.e. mixed, muddy, low intensity). The pure tone will advance more than the others, whether is warm or cold.

2. One dominant, one subordinate and one minor. The dominant is varied with different purities and values.
The detail is from Eugene Delacroix's Death of Sardanapolis. The whole picture employs an analogous colour scheme of red, red-orange and orange.

Complementary colours
Composition uses one hue and its complementary — e.g. blue and orange. The hues can be mixed in various proportions, and tones added with white or black (or preferably earth pigments).
The detail comes from a famous painting by Monet of the Beach at Trouville (1870). It was painted on the spot. Though seeming a careless, even clumsy, improvisatory sketch, it is nothing of the sort. Monet served a traditional apprenticeship, and is here playing off orange and flesh tones, against tints of blue.

Monochrome
We use one hue. Composition is achieved entirely through adjusting purities and tones. It is a limited but powerful approach that always makes a good exercise.
In this detail Titian has used a simple orange hue throughout. The marvellous variety comes from modifying purity and tone with glazes and scumbles — which demonstrates the power of old master techniques.

Questions often asked part two

1. Can I Mix Different Brands of Paint?
You may mix student quality paints with professional paint without risk, but not oil paints with acrylics. Oil on dry acrylics is fine, but not vice versa.
If you want to mix colours, start with two (cool and warm) reds, two blues, two yellows, and a white. You want two of each primary colour, one a warm version and one a cool. This will give you a larger range of colours when mixing than just one version of each primary. If you use warm colours only, or cool colours, without interchanging them, you will avoid neutral greys and mudding. This however may be desirable in some cases.
If you don't want to mix all your colours, also get an earth brown (burnt sienna or burnt umber), a golden earth brown (golden ochre), and a green (phthalo green).
Colour is essential in painting and the more you know about the colours you're using, the more you can get from it. Don't let the word "theory" intimidate you. The fundamentals of colour mixing aren't particularly tricky to understand.

2. Should I Paint on Paper or Canvas or What?
You can paint on practically anything provided the paint will stick and provided the paint won't rot the surface.

Acrylic paint can be painted on paper, card, wood, or canvas, with or without a primer being used first. Watercolour can be painted on paper, card, or special watercolour canvas.

A support for oil paint needs to be primed first (you may use two layers of Gesso), otherwise the oil in the paint will eventually rot the paper or threads of the canvas (Some paint pigments are chemical). You can buy pads of paper primed for oil paper, which are perfect for doing studies or if your storage space if limited.

3. How Many Paint Brushes Do I Need?
As few or as many as you like. if you're painting with oils, you can have a different brush for each colour, so that you don’t need to dry your brushes frequently. I mostly use just one brush, a specifically a No.10 size Filbert with bristle hairs ( made of pig hairs), rinsing it clean regularly as I'm painting. Don’t throw your worn out brushes because they ideal for some effects, grass for example

4. How Thick Should the Paint Be?
You may paint with as thick or thin paint as you desire. You can change the consistency of paint with a painting medium (ideal medium: Linoleum- poppy oil-stand oil- retouch varnish and turpentine in equal parts) to make it thinner, and apply colour evenly.

1. Μπορώ να αναμείξω διαφορετικές μάρκες χρώματος;
2. Θα έπρεπε να ζωγραφίσω επάνω σε χαρτόνι, σε μουσαμά, ή κάτι άλλο;
3. Πόσα πινέλα χρειάζομαι;

3. Με πόσο πηκτό χρώμα θα πρέπει να ζωγραφίζω;

Questions about painting (part one)
For beginners
Nobody started in painting as a master. Everybody has started from zero at the beginning, and with talent, studying and practice have reached a personal standard. The purpose of this article is to answer some very common questions
1. Do I need to draw well before I paint In the times of great art, drawing took apprentice painters two to three years before they took to paints. Even the mixing of colours took enough time before they started with brushes. Working with colour will not be a handicap if you haven’t mastered techniques yet. Without drawing you may still have the option of modern art, where drawing is not vital. What is important is to create art

2. What Kind of Paint are there?
You may use paints such as oils, acrylic, watercolour, and pastel. They all have their own personal qualities and none is better or significantly easier to master than the other. Which one is right for you depends to a large extent on how long you are prepared to wait for the colours to dry, or if you allergic to solvents
You may start with acrylics since they dry faster and are cleaned up with water. You may use them on canvas paper, or board, and mistakes may easily be hidden

3. What Brand of Paint Should I Buy?
It depends on how much you are prepared to pay. As a beginner you don’t need to practice with the best quality. When you have reached a good level I would advise you to use the best quality because it will reward you in practice. Try various brands and finally you may decide what brand suits you best. The better of course goes with the more expensive. Some paints are good for painting knives and others are great for glazes

If you mix colour with very cheap paints, you will find the results turn out dull. This is because there is less pigment in such paints and more filler.
4. What mixing medium must I use
There are a lot if different mediums with which we may mix colours and apply them on the canvas. The most popular is linoleum, (somehow yellowish, sometimes drying fast and sometimes slowly), poppy oil,( transparent), stand oil ( like honey, good for finishes), walnut, etc.

1. Χρειάζεται να σχεδιάζω καλά πριν ζωγραφίσω;
2. Τι είδη χρωμάτων υπάρχουν;
3.Τι μάρκα χρωμάτων να χρησιμοποιήσω;
4. Τι λάδι ζωγραφικής να χρησιμοποιήσω;

Pablo Picasso
Pablo Picasso was a Spanish painter who is widely acknowledged to be the most important artist of the 20th century. He experimented with a wide range of styles and themes in his long career, most notably inspiring 'Cubism'. He was the artist who opened widely the door of modern art in the 20th century, and had a great impact on thousands of new artists who tried to imitate him into creating scores of new styles many of which were a short lived failure/
Pablo Ruiz was born in Malaga on 25 October 1881, the son of an art teacher. He later adopted his mother's maiden name of Picasso. He grew up in Barcelona, showing artistic talent at an early age. In the early 1900s, he moved between France and Spain before finally settling in Paris in 1904. His artistic route was not covered with rose petals at least in the first fifty or more years. There he experimented with a number of styles and produced his own original ones, reflected in his 'Blue' and 'Rose' periods.
In 1907 Picasso painted 'Les Demoiselles d'Avignon', a revolutionary work that introduced a major new style - 'Cubism'. Picasso worked closely with the French artist Georges Braque in the development of this style. Picasso's next major innovation, in 1912, was 'Collage', attaching pieces of cloth, newspaper or advertising to his paintings. Picasso now moved from style to style, experimenting with painting and sculpture and becoming involved with the Surrealist movement. In 1937, he produced 'Guernica', a painting inspired by the destruction of the town in northern Spain by German bombers during the Spanish Civil War. Picasso supported the Republican government fighting General Francisco Franco, and never returned to Spain after Franco's victory.
Unlike many artists, Picasso remained in Paris during the German occupation. From 1946 to his death he lived mainly in the south of France. He continued to produce a huge variety of work including paintings, sculptures, etchings and ceramics.
Picasso was involved with a number of women during his life who were often artistic muses as well as lovers. He had four children. On 8 April 1973, he died of a heart attack at his home near Cannes.
