History
After the end of the Greek Independence war in 1830 and the creation of the new state there was a need for the education of young painters. Of course there was no such school of Art in the new born country, and the new young king Otto of Bavaria encouraged several young talented men to study art in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. In addition, after centuries of Ottoman rule, few opportunities existed for young artist in Greece itself, immediately after independence, so studying abroad was imperative for them. Munich, was an important international center for the arts and is the place where the majority of the Greek artists of 19th century would chose to study and a minority would go to Paris. Both academic and personal bonds developed between early Greek painters and Munich artistry giving birth to the Greek "Munich School" of painting. Many of these young artists later have returned to Greece to teach to the Polytechnic School and later Athens School of Fine Arts, where they would transmit their artistic experiences. However some of them like Nikolaus Gyzis chose to remain in Munich.
Artistic styles
The works of the Munich school painters are characterized by an expert use of colours that would overshadow the figures’ expressions. Scenes were depicted in a pompous and theatrical way, although not lacking emotional tension. In academic realism the imperative is the ethography, the representation of urban and/or rural life with a special attention in the depiction of architectural elements, the traditional clothes and the various objects. Munich School painters were specialized on portraiture, landscape painting and still life.
Representative artists
Artists that belong to the School of Munich include the first painters of free Greece such as Theodoros Vryzakis (1814–1878) and Dionysios Tsokos (1820–1862) (According to other art critics he belongs more to the Heptanes School. Both of them draw their subjects from the Greek War of Independence in 1821, focusing on idealized ideas on the Greek Revolution and not giving much attention to the violent and tragic aspects of a war. Even more dramatic in their depictions were the later Konstantinos Volanakis (1837–1907) and Ioannis Altamouras (1852–1878), that were focused more on the naval battles of the revolution
Main representatives of the artistic movement were apart from Volanakis the painters that worked mainly during the second half of the 19th century like Nikiphoros Lytras (1832–1904), Nikolaos Gyzis (1842–1901) and Georgios Iacovidis. (1853–1907). Gysis stayed at the Academy in Germany while the others have returned to teach at the Athens School of Fine Arts. Their teaching and artistry have marked the 19th century artistic era in Greece.
Nikiphoros Lytras is considered the pope of Greek painting and the major iconographer of Greek life during the 19th century. Paintings such as the sinking of the Turkish flag ship by Kanaris was a reference point in Greek art. Gyzis worked mainly on ethography while at the maturity of his career he shifted towards the of visions, allegories and symbolisms. Iacovidis paintings were mainly portraiture and depiction of children scenes. The latter was the founder and first curator of the National Gallery of Greece in Athens. Other painters include Epameinondas Thomopoulos, Nikolaos Vokos, and Polychronis Lembesis. Influences of academic realism can also be seen in the work of many Greek artists such as Spyros Vikatos (1878–1960). The end of the movement started when some Greek painters after the mid-19th century such as Periclis Pantazis (1849–1884) departed from academic realism towards impressionism and the final end occurred when expressionist Nikolaos Lytras (1883–1927) and Konstantinos Parthenis (1878–1967) started to teach at the Athens School of Fine Arts.

Sfumato

| |

Sfumato
It is one of the painting modes of the Renaissance. A second one was Chiaroscuro. It refers to a mode of painting in which the painter avoids extreme darks or lights, as the brightness values are grouped more or less tightly together around middle gray. There is a similarity of low-contrast between sfumato and photography. The Italian word sfumato comes from the Italian word (fumare, 'to smoke'), and captures the idea precisely. The finished painting appears as though a veil of smoke lies between the subject of the painting and the viewer. Sfumato added some brightness to the pure darks and blocked some of the pure brights of the subject.
It is not a difficult technique in practice. Of course it requires competence in brushwork and judgement of value (brightness), but does not necessarily require a high degree of skill. The painter uses a translucent dark such as asphaltum and then, while wet, paints back into this dark with an opaque light (e.g., some colour based on led white or titanium white). Some of the colour of the dark will now darken the opaque light and, simultaneously, the darks will be lightened. This operation can be repeated if necessary and, by so doing, very subtle blending effects may be achieved. It is not a technique using translucent layers as is sometimes supposed; it is obvious that there is a distinction between this technique and the straight-forward translucent painting of Titian. However the translucency of the darks, repeatedly applied and blended into the lights, does lend an enamelled character to the result which, in the hands of a competent practitioner, can be charming and can yield extremely subtle results.
Leonardo Da Vinci was the most prominent painter of sfumato and his famous painting of the Mona Lisa exhibits all the advantages of the technique. The historical value of this painting consists precisely in the subtle but accurate way in which emotions are expressed. This expression is due in no small part to the gentle shading that sfumato promotes. Leonardo da Vinci described sfumato as "without lines or borders, in the manner of smoke or beyond the focus plane.

Art from Ancient Greece to Renaissance

The Greeks called art (techne), whereas the Latins called it (ars). The words however didn’t have the meaning we have given them in the modern times.

The first one to define the word art was the Greek philosopher Aristotle who said that art was an activity obeying rules from somebody who had knowledge of his craft. A person learned the rules of a craft since his childhood and after a long apprenticing, he became himself a sculptor, a painter or a carpenter.

Philosophy in Greece tried to bring order, balance and clarity to the chaos of nature and the world. In order to preserve this order, it had to apply rules and support them. This is what we call “classical”, that is traditional and conservative.

The painters and sculptors were different from other craftsmen only with respect to their mastering of technique and skill. Sculpture and painting were separated from music and poetry which were considered divine and enjoyed respect from everybody.

The word (techni) meant mechanic, implying making things manually. Painters and sculptors belonged to a lower class in society, because people didn’t think much for those who used their hands to make things. So, craft and fine arts in ancient Greece were considered one and the same thing.

In the late ancient period there was a list of seven arts: Astronomy, Arithmetic, Dialectic, Rhetoric, Geometry, grammar and Music. Painting and sculpture were neglected. Despite Pliny’s and Varro’s efforts to include architecture and painting among the other arts, visual arts were ignored, and even Seneca refused them a place among them. Both the Greeks and the Romans considered painting and sculpture as manual arts like other crafts.

The word artista was used in the middle ages and meant a craftsman like in the ancient period, that is a person who had an activity he had trained in. The artists of this period didn’t have a social status any better than their ancient colleges and were generally anonymous. People judged them for their skill and technique.

By the 12th -13th centuries painting and sculpture were listed among other mechanical crafts. Because they ground their colours they belonged to the guild of apothecaries and physicians. Sculptures belonged to the guild of goldsmith.

Works of the 5th century didn’t survive, we have however descriptions of some of them and information about the career of the greatest painters. Polygnotos dealt with the depiction of depth and the psychological condition of his figures. Apollodoros dealt with the perspective and tonal values. Agatharhos also tried to depict objects with a perspective. Zeuxis had a great career and it reported he was the first one to organize a beauty contest in order to find a model for the beautiful Helen of Troy. In the 4th century realism and exact depth were the objective of most painters. Apellis was the great Alexander’s official painter. Some copies of the greatest works were discovered in Pompeii.

Good or bad art

Good or bad Art

After prevailing in the early 20th century, modernist painters have started oppressing the traditional artists for the way they expressed their art. Realism was actually banned from fine art institutes all over the world. Although art museums exhibited the realistic art of past centuries, they stubbornly refused to exhibit the works of world class contemporary realist artists, and ignored them without any excuse. At the same time they amply allowed Perceptual artists to exhibit their constructions, irrespective of poor quality, or lack of grace and meaning.

It is true that most of the modern works of art can not reach the height of the term “art”. It doesn’t mean of course that they can not create modern art, or even exhibit it. For four generations modernist artists and fine art college professors have been controlling all the major art museums, and galleries. They have also controlled all the fine art schools and the newspaper art reviews. They have been taking state subsidies and their art brochures have become school art books. Little children at the kindergarten are discouraged from painting realistically .When they grow, they are derided because they waste their time, and claim that anybody can paint a realistic work of art. Their teachers replace pencils with paper, buttons, glue and magazines and ask them to make collage instead.

Art professors with a realistic inclination have been dismissed from their posts in art schools and this nasty climate got worse in the midst of the 20ieth century. Very few art organizations managed to rescue these “heretic” realistic viewpoints. Ever since this cyclone of modern art has made its cycle without achieving its goals, that is its acceptance by the public, it gave place to a more tolerant behaviour. Very few heroic artists preserved the secrets of the great art of the past and started coming back dynamically with the love and encouragement of the art public and claimed the place in art that belongs to them. As oppression recedes, that doesn’t mean they will become oppressors themselves, since it is the public who will decide by themselves. The road ahead of them is still a long way off , but the truth and beauty of realistic art, thanks to the web that brings art into every house so easily, will bring about an inevitable comparison between them and it is true beyond any doubt that they will prevail.

Surrealism

Surrealism

Twentieth century century avant-garde art movement that originated in the nihilistic ideas of the Dadaist and French literary figures, especially those of its founder, French writer André Breton (1896-1966). At first a Dadaist, he wrote three manifestos about Surrealism — in 1924, 1930, and 1934, and opened a studio for "surrealist research."

Influenced by the theories of the pioneer of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud (German, 1856-1939), the images found in surrealist works are as confusing and startling as those of dreams. Surrealist works can depict fantasies ,as in the works of René Magritte (Belgian, 1898-1967), Salvador Dalí (Spanish, 1904-1988), Yves Tanguy (French, 1900-1955), and Alfred Pellan (Canadian, 1906-1988). These artists were partly inspired bysymbolism, and partly the metaphysical painting of Giorgio de Chirico (Italian, 1888-1978). Or, it could have a more abstract style, as in the works of Joan Miró (Spanish, 1893-1983), Max Ernst (German, 1891-1976), and André Masson (French, 1896-1987), who invented spontaneous techniques , modelled upon the psychotherapeutic procedure of "free association" as a means to eliminate conscious control in order to express the workings of the unconscious mind, such asexquisite corspe.

The Basics of Dada Movement in Art

Dada was an artistic and literary movement that started in Europe when World War I was going on. Because of the war, many artists, intellectuals and writers, especially those from France and Germany, moved to Switzerland, which was a neutral country. Instead of being relieved that they had escaped, the artists, intellectuals and writers were furious with the modern society. So, they decided to show their protest through artistic medium. They decided to create non-art since art in the society anyway had no meaning.

The so-called non-artists turned to creating art that had soft obscenities, scattered humour, visible puns and everyday objects. The most outrageous painting was created by Marcel Duchamp, when he painted a moustache on a copy of Mona Lisa and scribbled obscenities under it. He also created his sculpture called Fountain, which was actually a urinal without the plumbing and it had a fake signature.

The public were repulsed by the Dada movement. However, the Dadaists found this attitude encouraging. And, slowly the movement spread from Zurich to other parts of Europe and New York City. Just as many mainstream artists were thinking about this movement seriously, the Dada movement dissolved around the early 1920s.

This art movement was a protest, but at the same time it managed to be enjoyable and amusing. It was sarcastic, colorful, quirky and silly. If a person at that time had not been aware of the logic behind the movement, he or she would have been wondering what the artist was up to creating pieces like the ones that were created. However, the artist who created the Dada art was very serious about his work. The movement did not favor one medium over another. It used everything from glass to plaster to geometric tapestries to wooden reliefs. In addition, the movement was also responsible for influencing many trends in the field of visual art, the most well-known being Surrealism.
