Art lesson part two

Questions often asked part two

1. Can I Mix Different Brands of Paint?
You may mix student quality paints with professional paint without risk, but not oil paints with acrylics. Oil on dry acrylics is fine, but not vice versa.
If you want to mix colours, start with two (cool and warm) reds, two blues, two yellows, and a white. You want two of each primary colour, one a warm version and one a cool. This will give you a larger range of colours when mixing than just one version of each primary. If you use warm colours only, or cool colours, without interchanging them, you will avoid neutral greys and mudding. This however may be desirable in some cases.
If you don't want to mix all your colours, also get an earth brown (burnt sienna or burnt umber), a golden earth brown (golden ochre), and a green (phthalo green).
Colour is essential in painting and the more you know about the colours you're using, the more you can get from it. Don't let the word "theory" intimidate you. The fundamentals of colour mixing aren't particularly tricky to understand.

2. Should I Paint on Paper or Canvas or What?
You can paint on practically anything provided the paint will stick and provided the paint won't rot the surface.

Acrylic paint can be painted on paper, card, wood, or canvas, with or without a primer being used first. Watercolour can be painted on paper, card, or special watercolour canvas.

A support for oil paint needs to be primed first (you may use two layers of Gesso), otherwise the oil in the paint will eventually rot the paper or threads of the canvas (Some paint pigments are chemical). You can buy pads of paper primed for oil paper, which are perfect for doing studies or if your storage space if limited.

3. How Many Paint Brushes Do I Need?
As few or as many as you like. if you're painting with oils, you can have a different brush for each colour, so that you don’t need to dry your brushes frequently. I mostly use just one brush, a specifically a No.10 size Filbert with bristle hairs ( made of pig hairs), rinsing it clean regularly as I'm painting. Don’t throw your worn out brushes because they ideal for some effects, grass for example

4. How Thick Should the Paint Be?
You may paint with as thick or thin paint as you desire. You can change the consistency of paint with a painting medium (ideal medium: Linoleum- poppy oil-stand oil- retouch varnish and turpentine in equal parts) to make it thinner, and apply colour evenly.

1. Μπορώ να αναμείξω διαφορετικές μάρκες χρώματος;
2. Θα έπρεπε να ζωγραφίσω επάνω σε χαρτόνι, σε μουσαμά, ή κάτι άλλο;
3. Πόσα πινέλα χρειάζομαι;

3. Με πόσο πηκτό χρώμα θα πρέπει να ζωγραφίζω;

Questions about painting (part one)
For beginners
Nobody started in painting as a master. Everybody has started from zero at the beginning, and with talent, studying and practice have reached a personal standard. The purpose of this article is to answer some very common questions
1. Do I need to draw well before I paint In the times of great art, drawing took apprentice painters two to three years before they took to paints. Even the mixing of colours took enough time before they started with brushes. Working with colour will not be a handicap if you haven’t mastered techniques yet. Without drawing you may still have the option of modern art, where drawing is not vital. What is important is to create art

2. What Kind of Paint are there?
You may use paints such as oils, acrylic, watercolour, and pastel. They all have their own personal qualities and none is better or significantly easier to master than the other. Which one is right for you depends to a large extent on how long you are prepared to wait for the colours to dry, or if you allergic to solvents
You may start with acrylics since they dry faster and are cleaned up with water. You may use them on canvas paper, or board, and mistakes may easily be hidden

3. What Brand of Paint Should I Buy?
It depends on how much you are prepared to pay. As a beginner you don’t need to practice with the best quality. When you have reached a good level I would advise you to use the best quality because it will reward you in practice. Try various brands and finally you may decide what brand suits you best. The better of course goes with the more expensive. Some paints are good for painting knives and others are great for glazes

If you mix colour with very cheap paints, you will find the results turn out dull. This is because there is less pigment in such paints and more filler.
4. What mixing medium must I use
There are a lot if different mediums with which we may mix colours and apply them on the canvas. The most popular is linoleum, (somehow yellowish, sometimes drying fast and sometimes slowly), poppy oil,( transparent), stand oil ( like honey, good for finishes), walnut, etc.

1. Χρειάζεται να σχεδιάζω καλά πριν ζωγραφίσω;
2. Τι είδη χρωμάτων υπάρχουν;
3.Τι μάρκα χρωμάτων να χρησιμοποιήσω;
4. Τι λάδι ζωγραφικής να χρησιμοποιήσω;

Composition in Painting

| |

Composition in art
It is an important part of the painting procedure and involves the arrangement of elements and getting them in to work together. The artist lays out the shapes and divides the space in the painting in such away that appeals to your senses. The purpose of composition is to lead the eye into a painting, and keep the viewer’s interest in it.
When you develop your composition, try to avoid putting the main focus of interest in the centre of your painting. Divide the areas of your canvas into parts of different sizes. If you want to paint a landscape painting, do not put the horizon right in the centre of your painting. Because people read from left to right, do not place all the interesting parts of your composition on the left side of your painting and people will have no reason to continue viewing the rest of your painting. You had better keep your interesting elements away from the edges of the canvas.
It is a common mistake to place the focal point of a painting directly in the centre. Another common mistake is to split the painting directly in half as in a landscape painting where the horizon line is directly in the middle of the painting.
The focal point in your painting is the main element or subject in your painting and should attract the viewer’s eye. All other elements in the composition of your painting should help to guide the viewer’s eye to this focal point.
A good way for creating a focal point in your painting is by using colour. For instance, if your painting is bluish you can make the focal point stand out by using yellow. This warm yellow will stand out against the cool blues in the rest of the painting.
You may also create a focal point in your painting by using contrast. For instance you could use mainly dark values in your painting and create a centre of interest that is light in value.
Another way of creating a focal point is by using size differences. For instance, if you were to create a cityscape, you could make a tall building stand out amongst smaller ones.
When you compose a painting, you had better use an odd number of elements. No one is exactly sure why this works. One theory is that a viewer breaks up the composition by mentally grouping even elements together.
If you have more than one object in a painting, you need to arrange them with regards to the distance between them. Objects should never “just touch” one another. You should either overlap objects or have space between them. Try not to equally space objects, but instead, vary the distance between objects to create more variety.
When you start a painting, you may choose either a warm or a cool colour theme. Do not mix the two into one painting or you could confuse the viewer. This is not to say you cannot use warm and cool colours together in a painting. Just try and make one more dominant than the other.
Value is how light or dark a colour is in your painting. A painting that is all one value is boring. You need to have a variety of light and dark objects in a painting to create more interest .If a scene inspires you, a view finder tool that may help you with your composition may help you with capturing the scene. You can make such a viewfinder by cutting two L-shaped cardboards that can create a frame when joined together.
