Drying Time in Painting

Drying time has to do with more than one factor. The painting surface plays a huge role in the drying time of your paint. When the priming is only one layer, the canvas remains absorbent because the base color on the canvas is very thin. The pre-stretched canvases in the hobby shops are usually very absorbent. Therefore, the oil that is in your tubes of paint will be quickly sucked into the canvas itself, and the paint will dry quicker. If you buy a roll of canvas, it has a double layer of acrylic priming and the paint dries slower. Before you start painting, cover the canvas with one or two layers of Gesso and when the layers dry , make a brownish color (burnt sienna, cobalt, raw sienna ) and spread it on the canvas, diluted only with turpentine and a little painting medium with a piece of cloth. This procedure will protect the canvas fibers from the chemicals of the paints.Personally I use a mixture of the basic mediums (oil painting medium+ poppy oil+ stand oil) with a smaller portion of retouch varnish. This mixture carries the qualities of each medium. The retouch varnish for a firm hold of the paint on the canvas, even after a dry layer of paint, the linseed oil which gives gloss to the canvas, the poppy oil which doesn’t turn yellowish and the honey like stand oil which is good for final touches. The mixture has a 24 hour drying time. You may speed up this time with a little turpentine.Colors dry at different times. Flake white for example dries fast, whereas zinc white is very slow in drying. When you make mixtures with Burnt Umber –Raw Umber and Flake white they will speed up drying time. Bright colors like Cadmium red- Cadmium Yellow and Alizarin Crimson will slow down drying time when they are added to the mixtures.
